No Sense Of Humor

That's what I knew and had reinforced yesterday about some of the JRSRs.  You would think that playing 4BB was like the worst thing that happened to these guys.  I guess I'm getting ahead of myself and should start at the beginning.

Upon my return from IR and resuming my role as daily captain I thought it would be helpful to play 4BB in an effort to help prepare everyone for the championship that we'll have later this year.  Plus I know that my subs had been mixing things up (and apparently the players) with some new formats.  Plus we had a big crowd (16 players) and I wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to contribute.  The moaning, chaos, and general complaining that ensued was historic.  First of all I found out some don't listen or don't believe what they hear and tried to submit a 2BB score.  The 12 other players thought that was grounds for disqualification.  The real reason was that team was leading after recalculation to the proper format.  They had the remarkable score of minus 6.  The next closest was plus 2 (which included all 4 players in the water at no. 2).  The remaining scores spiraled upward from there and aren't really worthy of comment.  It was interesting to note my intellectual capacity was only challenged a few times;  there were only three threats to join TCC;  one serious proposal to name a new captain (no one really wanted the clip board);  and, six who vowed to find another group to join.  I guess that'll end any future social experiments.

There has been a lot of lively debate about rules recently.  The GWH had a question that is intriguing.  No one had had ever heard of invoking the yellow stake rule on an unmarked hazard.  You'll have to see him for details.  There have also been a lot of questions concerning adjustable clubs.  We're still trying to get clarification on that issue.

PS - All four players being in the water on the same hole deserves to have a term.  Any thoughts?

PPS -  The Big Bertha driver was introduced in 1991 and was 190cc.  Taylor Made introduced the Burner metal driver in 1979 and it was the same size as a wooden headed club.  My how things have changed.

A Bit Of Chaos

I've been sitting on the sidelines this past week for a variety of reasons.  Primarily my aching back decided to act up again and I played the par three course with Miss Emma while she was visiting.  But being the interested observer I am I noted the results when you don't have a strong captain to organize the daily game.  I never fear when the Lr Dr. is in charge.  But, when you have a committee handle things chaos can rule.  Such is the case from last Wednesday (based on comments from various participants).  Actually I think LTG is past his probationary period and is capable of running things without a problem.  However he must guard against listening to T Squared.  We all know he can have some warped ideas at times, and be a disruptive factor.  This must have been the case since there were numerous comments about revolting;  leaving the club and joining TCC and etc.  As a consequence I'm going to make a early comeback and show up on Tuesday.  In reality I'm tired of not playing and just miss all you characters.

There have been a lot of rules questions raised by Gilhooley, OTR and others.  We'll hold an informal seminar at lunch for those interested.  Also you see the August issue of "Golf Magazine".  The normal rules article has some interesting questions.  Also there is a piece devoted to Four Ball competition (aka better ball).  Since we all use this format on a daily basis it should be required reading.

The Best

That's the only way to describe the holiday weekend.  Since we started to celebrate on Wednesday with the club's fireworks it seemed like it was never ending.  By last evening I was ready for a break.  We played lots of golf, ate a lot of picnic food, and generally had a great time with good friends.  Yesterday we played with MR/MRS OTR and had a hard match that ended in a draw (my par putt stopped just short on 18).  Since it was so pleasant we decided to have drinks on the patio.  Before you knew it the place filled up everyone who was coming off the course.  I didn't take a headcount but I know it was hard to find a seat.  Everyone seemed to like the new menu and I know the cold beer and frozen drinks were a big hit.  Throw in the music and it was an impromptu party.  It will be hard to return to a normal week.

The weather looks good with temps on the cool side and an occasional shower here and there.  I expect we'll have some big groups for our daily fun.  We may try a new format this week.  OTR used it on Saturday and barely made home before being strung up on the big tree on 15.  If I can get immunity we may give it a go.  Stay tuned for further details.

Miss Emma is coming to stay for a few days, and wants to play our par 3 course.  Between golf, the pool and her active mind  I'm sure she'll keep us busy.  Plus the grand dog is staying for a few more days.  The dog has put new meaning to the term "fish and house guests smell after three days".

PS - Note to Twinkle Toes the greens don't get much better than they were this weekend.  Hope you had a chance to experience them.

Must Be The Holiday

That's the only reason I can come up with for the big crowd on Wednesday.  We had 18 players sign in and create a bit of a challenge in making the teams.  After careful consideration we played in threesomes.  That seems to work the best from a time standpoint, plus makes for interesting game of 2bb of three.  The scores seemed to be bunched into two groups;  those who were good and the others.  Personally I fell into the latter group, but had a good team on paper.  But you can't win when starting out plus 2 on the first hole.  I don't really remember who won but I know the first three teams were only separated by a stroke.  We've had a lot score card playoffs recently.

I'm glad the wind died down for the fire works.  It could have been really interesting otherwise.  The club put on a nice show.  We sat on a private patio and every time one went off I could hear the same little girl scream (from the club house).  I hope she was enjoying them.  Based on the number of cars parked around the neighborhood I think a lot of non members did too.

Golf today, tomorrow, and Sunday.  Monday I'll try to put these old bones back in place.  Then on to Tuesday for the start of another week of JRSRs.

Going Low

That was the name of the game yesterday.  With 15 players and 5 teams the scores were pretty good.  You had to be in double digits to even get a sniff.  With 2 teams at minus 18 it took a score card playoff to determine the winner.  Even that wasn't quick.  But eventually a winner was declared.  If my memory is correct LTG edged out KC for the win.  The SOTD was rousing but no winners, but a couple of close calls.

Good ribs last night on the patio.  If you haven't tried the Tuesday night special you should.  Each week it is something different, but always good.  Lots going on at the club over the next week or so.  The culmination will be the Lobster Dinner sponsored by the JRSR's.  There is well over 100 reservations.  But don't miss the Bingo Night the week prior.  Someone finally got smart and made the caller so I couldn't win the coverall (there's history there).  There may even be a guest appearance from the Caller Emeritus.

Morning Shower

This AM the grand dog conned me into taking her out at 4 AM.  Big mistake!  There was a skunk roaming in the backyard that neither of us saw (meaning the dog) until it was too late.  The skunk didn't like the fact that we were there and let the world know it.  Fortunately I knew something was up when the dog took off like a shot and was able to get her back before too much damage was done.  But, she got enough spray that it smelled like hell.  Now if you recall we had a little incident with a skunk a few months ago with the Nurse's car along Bates road, and still had a supply of  "Skunk Off".  After a liberal application it was time for bath.  Being a good sized dog we thought a shower was the better option (besides we don't have tub on the first floor).  Let's just say the dog wasn't interested in bathing at the early morning hour.  After some effort we had a big ball of wet fur trying to shake in our bathroom.  By 8 AM the only person asleep in the house was the dog.  The Nurse and I were trying to get some residual skunk smell out.  As of right now we're pretty much back to normal, but putting the short leash rule in effect for late night potty breaks.

Lots of golf to look forward to this week, along with the 4th's celebration.

A Wet One

It was a wet one Thursday morning as we prepared to tee it up.  We were playing a morning round due the stag.  Field skins was the game of the day with only three winners ($15 per skin).  The competition was brutal with a lot of people biting the dust.  It took at least a net birdie to cash in.  That's only fair when you think about it.

Pray that it doesn't get really hot before the course dries out.  We don't need anymore problems this year.  High heat would mean a real danger for fungus.  Did you notice the tree at the walking bridge on #14?  The high wind took out the rest of it (part was lost in 2012).  Now the hole really opens up.  The risk reward on the second shot has just changed.  Now we can really go for it after a shorter tee shot.

OTR says he hasn't lost a ball in a while, but I found another yesterday.  He said it must have been lost by someone else.  My response was right!  In any event I returned it to him since it was a Pro V.
