Surprise Visitor

Went to lunch last Friday like always, and who shows up but Silk. We thought he must have a memory lapse or a seizure since we don't normally see him until sometime in May. I guess he had some local business to attend to and had time to make lunch. It was a pleasant surprise for all the regulars.

It is going to be 50 plus on Tuesday. My guess is that there will be some walkers out trying to get some extra swings in before we start to get serious again. This keeps going like this and maybe we'll have any early Spring. I know it won't happen, but one can dream. I did bring my spare clubs in from the garage to warm them up in case I want to hit a few balls into the lake from my backyard. I haven't really had the urge to play until I was watching Torey Pines over the weekend. That and seeing commercials for The Masters kinda woke me up from golf hibernation. It is getting close to the time to take to the annual trek to the simulator at Tameron. Get ready TTS.

I went to the Toledo Auto Show Saturday. In a way it was disappointing since not all manufacturers didn't participate (same as last year). There were a lot fuel efficient cars there, but most of them looked smaller than a golf cart. You want sticker shock? How about a $54,000.00 Chrysler 300.!

Validation

Once again my theory about snow removal was proven correct. If you wait long enough it does melt. Plus, think about the fact I didn't have to use any petroleum products and was not dependent on foreign oil. And, I got to stay inside where it was toastie warm and watch my neighbor blow snow in his face when the wind blew the wrong way.

I had another of life's lessons reinforced over the weekend. We all know you don't tug on Superman's cap and tinkle into the wind. The other you don't do is shoot pool with anyone on their own pool table. Right OTR? I won't elaborate but a few of us learned this again as we participated in the first round of the winter pool league. There is always the next round.

Too bad about Joe Pa. I always find it amazing how quickly some people pass on after retiring, especially when it is forced on them.

Golf thought - Don't play with anyone who questions a 7.

See you at lunch.

It Had To Happen

Yes it finally had to snow. I thought we were supposed to get three to five inches, but it looks like two on our driveway. I was going to get the snow blower out but decided that was too much work. Besides the temperature is going to be forty in a day or so, and it will just melt anyway. It always does if you wait long enough. Sometimes you have to wait a month, but that method hasn't failed me yet.

Lunch was attended by the same group of characters. Twinkle Toes got an education about Medicare. He was amazed he will have to pay something. He thought it was free after paying in for all those years. I'm not sure he believed us. The youngster has a lot to learn. He was actually the closest winner we had in the SOTD. Rolled four ones on the first roll and then a deuce on the second.

PS - I saw a bald eagle on the side of the road just south of Rte. 582 going south on I 75. It was feasting on some road kill. What a magnificent bird, and big also. I'm told there are 75 nesting pairs in Ohio.

All's Quiet

It looks like the winter blahs are setting in early, not much is really going on. All the snow birds have long flown away and the rest of us are hunkering down as the temperatures drop. Although we haven't really had it that bad. In fact it looks like the temps will be rather moderate this week.

Friday lunch was attended by seven JR/SR's, and most were more senior than junior (a sign of the times). Not much to report on since I sat in the middle and only picked up snippets of multiple conversations. We did have a couple of close calls with the SOTD, but the pot still grows.

NFL games were a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure I have any dogs left in this hunt. I may have to root for the 49Er's for no other reason than I like their uniforms. Other than that I'm looking forward to the NCAA basketball tourney.

Talk at you later.

PS - All the golf magazines are talking about new equipment. One big item this year will be higher lofted drivers. I've tried one and think they have merit. Of course anything that gives you 5 more yards is worth considering.

Where's The Snow?

I can't believe we're almost at the middle of January and no real winter to speak of. In fact it has been so nice there have been golfers on the course. I thought about playing over the weekend but couldn't quite fit it in. I understand Twinkle Toes was seen tripping the light fantastic on the loop. He may think the extra rounds will give him a leg up, but very little short a swing transplant will give him much help. Loved watching the final round in Hawaii on Monday afternoon/evening. It was really more interesting than the beat-down Alabama put on LSU. I think the game was over after the kickoff. I haven't seen hitting that hard in a long time.

Played poker at Caranor last night. Made a big comeback and only lost $.50. Much better than my luck at gin recently. Playing with those old sharks from the PGGA can be hard on your bankroll. I felt like the sacrificial lamb on Monday. It took all my meager skills to keep my losing to a comfortable level. But when your opponent goes down after two cards four hands in a row there isn't much you can do. Thank goodness Old Mo decided to sit with me after a while.

Today's golf thought - It's as easy to lower your handicap as it is to reduce your hat size.

From the mouth of Bobby Bowden, FSU - " After you retire, there's only big event left, and I ain't ready for that." I think we all agree.

Golf term - Mother-in-law: A shot that looked good leaving

Hope to see ya Friday,

The Lunch Crew

Since it's January and the club is closed for a while we convened for lunch at Bar Louie's. Now I know it isn't the favorite spot for all our members but it is one place where we can gather around one big table. The only real problem is it is hard to carry on multiple conversations. Especially when half the crowd seems to have developed hearing problems. But, I know we all enjoyed getting together. A new touch is the traveling dice cup for the SOTD. We had two close calls but no winners.

The conversation was varied and opinionated about numerous topics. But, one that got a lot of attention was how many of Fred's drivers Gilhooley had borrowed and where their location was. Fred was thinking about putting radio chips in the grips (like they do for pets) so he could track them. The consensus was most of them had been spirited away to Arizona and were probably on the golf club black market. Someone came up with the theory that Gilhooley was really working for the club manufactures who were only interested in inflating their sales (we all know Fred's rep for buying clubs).

I saw a new golf term - Ocho Stinko - Making an 8 on a hole. I think we can all relate to that.

Golf thought - Confidence evaporates in the presence of fairway water.

Football comment- " I asked Darrel Royal, the coach of the Texas Longhorns, why he didn't recruit me, and he said: Well, Walt we took a look at you and you weren't any good." Walt Garrison/Oklahoma State

Until next time.

Wow!

Have you watched some of the BCS Bowl games? There really have been some exciting finishes.
I think maybe the best so far has been the MSU game. U of M comes in a pretty close second (hard for me to admit being a Buckeye). Lets hope the championship game isn't a dud.

The weather has turned cold and now we can hunker down for a while. On the bright side the days are getting longer. And, the PGA season kicks off this weekend with the Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course at Kapalua. I always like this one since I've been fortunate to play the course multiple times. The finishing holes are really great. and have spectacular views. I wonder if the simulators have this track?

There are still a few of us left in the area. Lunch will still be on Friday with the site to be announced. But, my guess we will start at Bar Louie's this week. Since I have dice cup we can have the SOTD.
