Giving Thanks

First I give thanks that we are all safe, healthy, and can gather for the holiday.  Secondly, I give thanks we survived the holiday.  With two extra adults, two grand children, and lastly two active dogs there is never a dull moment around the house.  Fortunately we had good weather and weren't cooped up in the house.  Between early morning Black Friday shopping (yes, it's a tradition when the family is in town),  going to the Lights Before Christmas (it was very cold Friday night), going to Costco,  and other activities it was non stop activity.  As usual the Nurse and I collapsed for a quick cat nap after everyone left.

Speaking of the dogs.  Our squirrels have the "number" of the little dog.  They teased him every chance they got.  The ultimate was when one looked in one of our big windows that looks out on the lake.  It was like the squirrel was daring him.  Of course the dog didn't have a chance of getting the squirrel and it just drove him bonkers.  And then it seemed like the blue jays got into the act.  There was a lot of frustrated barking going on.  The big dog seems must wiser and only reacted when she had the chance to go outside.

Go Bucks!  That was a great game if you're a Buckeye.  All except for the injury to J. T. Barret.  Now we'll see what kind of team they really are.  I wouldn't bet against them,  but I think it'll be awfully tough to get in the playoff even if the they win the Big 10 Championship.

I was thinking of play golf today, but we really need to start decorating  for Christmas.  Since the family won't be here this year maybe we'll tone it down a bit.

Back to work,

This and That

Not much happening due to the weather these days.  I've seen everything but snow this morning.  One thing I'm sure of is that I don't live anywhere near Buffalo.  Those people are in for an interesting week with 7 feet of snow, warm weather and now rain on the way.  Pump and boat sales must be up this week.

Twinkle Toes, Brad and I attended the TDGA Club Issues last Friday.  This is annual event where all the area club reps gather and talk about what is going on at their clubs.  A couple of interesting things came out of the meeting.  First one club uses the sum of handicap and age to determine which tee members use in tournaments.  The magic number is 90.  Think about it.  Second many of the clubs are changing the guest fee policy.  And, no one was raising them.

Owens Community College is offering a golf rules glass this winter.  It looks like it will be one night a week (two hours) for 5 weeks.  Cost is $49.00 (includes the rules book), and will be taught by an experienced rules official.  Check www.OwensWorks.com for details.

I talked with the SD and it looks like we'll start meeting for our weekly lunch on Thursday's at the club starting this week.  To date some of us have been doing this informally and hoping to play golf.  Since that doesn't seem to be in the cards we might as well go into winter mode.

See ya,

PS - Congrats to all you JRSR bingo winners.

Another Gilhooley Winner

That's right the Gilhooley family had another winner.  It wasn't in the SOTD, but rather in a lively game of LRC (a popular dice game).  Think of four couples sitting around the dinning table relaxing after a comfort food dinner of chicken soup/stew followed by cake and ice cream.  The table clears and the LRC dice come out and everyone digs into their wallets for three one dollar bills.  The game progresses to conclusion, but no one came claim the prize.  Round 2 begins after another ante;  the game progresses again to the point of a potential winner and Mr. Gilhooley manages to win this time.  A total of $48.00 (all ones).  This is on top of the $54.00 won earlier in the week by Bags.  Now that is one big stack of bills concentrated in one spot.  One further comment -  The LR Dr. has a challenger for his sweet tooth supremacy.  We all learned Dave E. has real sweet tooth.

Not much else going on.  Golf?  Maybe if the snow melts quickly.

Rumor Has It

Rumor has it the GWH has returned from hunting out west and had bagged a deer.  But the ironic thing is he really wasted his time making the trip.  The other morning he was seen walking down his driveway to the mailbox with a small herd of deer following him.  From what I was told there four of the critters to be exact and they were waiting for him to put out the corn so they could have breakfast.  Then I'm told that after he fed them he left to go deer hunting in Michigan.  You can't make this stuff up!

Rumor also has it that the LR Dr was in Las Vegas recently attending CPE classes so he keep up on the latest treatments he needs to administer in our locker room.  I'm told he elected not to stay at the hotel where the seminars were being presented (the Hard Rock) because of cost.  Instead he booked himself into the Red Roof Inn which was across the street.  Plus that location had the added benefit of being next to a very popular "gentleman's club".  Now I'm suggesting anything, but you draw your own conclusion.  Again you can't make this stuff up.

Don't you just love the JRSRs.  There is always a story to be told.

A Record Day

With nine players and an equal split on talent we played a scramble with three man teams.  Scores were pretty close with two teams tied at -3.  It took 16 holes on a scorecard playoff to determine the winner.  I have never seen it go beyond 5 holes before.  Unfortunately my team was only -2.  However, if we could have made one more birdie we could have won in only 14 holes (that still would have been a record).  Now that is new meaning for Silly Season.

We also had another anomaly.  When I walked in the grill after changing my shoes I was greeted by the Nurse and Bags.  Bags had a big s... eating grin on her face and said "show me the money".  She had rolled 5 fours in two rolls.  After making the appropriate inquiries about witnesses, affidavits and etc. I was assured it was legit (mind you one witness is married to her).  Reluctantly I paid off and the ladies quickly scurried out the door with a big wad of ones.  Fortunately there is still money in the pot.

The weather looks bad for about a week.  There is probably no golf until next Tuesday at the earliest.

Turtles and Frogs

If you were around the old course on Saturday morning you would have seen what looked like a bunch of turtles running around the fairways. At least that's what it reminded me of with the full cart covers.  Big old turtles creeping along the fairways.  The frog part was my cart that had a modified cover that went by the product name of Frogger and was really more of a cart poncho.  All of us had heaters to warm our chilled bones.  Six of us got in a reasonably comfortable 18 holes before adjourning to the clubhouse for hot chocolate and cookies.  OTR was the big skins game winner when his missed putt was blown in the hole on 18 by a gust of wind.  It must have rolled back a good five inches.  The President and I were the only players who ended up "Oscar Mayered".  I don't know about anyone else but my nose is still running.

The weather really looks iffy for a few days.  Something about a polar vortex moving through.  We'll see if the turtles are back at it later this week.

That's Fun

That was the response from The Appraiser after playing a two man shamble with LTG.  Needless to say they used LTG's drive all day.  I doubt if AP has ever been that close after his drive.  But they barely beat OTR and Gilhooley (who reportedly squabbled all the way around).  The rest of us were just contributors.  Actually Dennis C and I were doing pretty well until we realized we could be candidates for DFL.  We couldn't even manage that.  The dice didn't cooperate (you had to be there).  Since everyone liked the format we may do it again, but with different pairings.

I don't know how much more golf is left this year.  It all depends on the weather.  Saturday looks iffy, but I imagine some brave souls will show up for coffee if the sun is out.

Final Tally

The final numbers are in for the season.  The JRSR's rounds played were up by 15% from 2013.  We played 657 rounds from April 1 thru October 31.  The most rounds were played by LTG closely followed by Gilhooley.  TZ and myself were third, and The Appraiser was next.  Check the locker room bulletin board for the complete list.

As expected it was too cold to play golf.  No, actually it was too cold to be comfortable.  The Nurse gave me an early b-day present - a heated vest.  I used it to blow leaves on Sunday and it worked pretty well.  It isn't bulky and I can see where it won't restrict your swing.  Hopefully I can try it out this week.  Now all I need is a cart cover to go with the heater and seat blanket.  Now all I need is willing players.

See ya,
